Gyveno kartą medkirtys. Vienintelis jo užsiėmimas (be medžių žudimo) buvo cirkas. Vieną dieną medkirtys su šeima nuėjo į Anglijos liliputų cirką. Kaip neišsilavinusiam, bukam, viską tiesmukiškai priimančiam kaimiečiui, cirkas visiškai nepatiko. Jis nesuprato nė vieno liliputų pokšto. Ir maži žmogėnai pradėjo kelti jam nesuvaldomą pyktį, kuris vis augo, su kiekviena orkestro sukelta vis kvailesne garso banga. Medkirtys net pradėjo drebėti iš pykčio, jam atrodė, kad slykštūs, ne gana to, slidūs ir gleivėti, padarai iš jo tyčiojasi. Viskas sukosi ratu: raudona, balta, raudona balta ir įkyrus žmogėnų juokas! Medkirtys nebegalėjo tverti. Bėda ta, kad jis visada ir visur su savimi nešiojosi didelį, masyvų ir aprudyjusį savo kirvį! Tad nieko nelaukdamas atsistojo ir lėtais, bet sunkiais žingsniais artėjo prie tikslo, vilkdamas žeme kirvį. Viskas vyko, kaip sapne: žmonės klykė, spiegė. O vargšai liliputai – vienam pasisekė, jo galva nulėkė pirma ir greitai. Kiti nebuvo tokie laimingi, kam kirtis į nugara, kas perrėžtas pusiau, kas nuosavomis akimis galėjo matyti savo užpakalį. Neišsigelbėjo nė vienas! Kruvinoji arena buvo panaši į raudonos rožės žiedą. Tik jei rožė būtų turėjusi mėsos ir iš tos mėsos kyšančių kaulų.
Žinoma juodasis cirkas nesitesė amžinai, nors galbūt pragare vargšai liliputai tai išgyvena begales kartų. Medkirtys buvo suimtas. Kai jis atsipeikėjo tamsioje kameroje – suprato ką padaręs. Bet nesigailėjo, tik nervingai nusišypsojo, ir išdaužęs langelio stiklą persipjovė sau gerklę...
